In a tight game, the Charlotte Tarpons Varsity Baseball team captured their 2nd District Championship in as many years last night. Shout out to Coach Lavell Cudjo for running a quality program for many years.
Senior Edwin Feliciano started on the mound in an impressive outing allowing only 4 hits, giving up 5 walks, and posting 11 strikeouts in 6 innings. Junior Dominic Giglio came in to close out the night and seal the victory allowing 0 hits, 0 walks, and posting 1 strikeout.
The Tarpons combined for 4 hits scoring 2 runs with only 1 being earned. Brody Brantley contributed with a double in the bottom of the 4th. Charlotte scored first when Adam Lee hit a hard ground ball to center scoring Caden Speciale (pinch runner for Edwin Feliciano) in the bottom of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 3rd they added another run when Dominic Giglio scored from third on an error by first baseman Alexander Mankin. Giglio led the night with 2 of the Tarpons 4 hits with the other two coming from Brody Brantley and Adam Lee.
Fort Myers combined for 4 hits of their own with Michael Magas, Cory Banasiak, Alexander Mankin, and William Davey each contributing one each. Brady Best was on the mound for the Green Wave giving up 4 hits, 3 walks, and posting 7 strikeouts.
The championship proved to be a formidable match-up with defense being the decisive factor. While Fort Myers threatened in both the 4th and 5th innings, Charlotte was able to shut them down ending each inning with a double-play.
Both Charlotte and Fort Myers will go on to play in the Regionals beginning next week. Regional Tournament seeding will be posted Friday, April 18 at 1PM.
